Obituary for William S. (Bill) Hunt
William S. (Bill) Hunt died January 9, 2014, at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper following a massive stroke.He was 81 years old.
Bill was born in New York to Stewart and Katherine Hunt on August 16, 1932.Upon graduation from high school Bill joined the Merchant Marines and sailed the North Atlantic.Upon discharge from his service Bill joined the police force ending his 20 years of service as a captain in Suffolk County on Long Island.
Bill was an avid climber and outdoorsman and ran several times in the Boston Marathon and other races.He developed a love of climbing in the Mountains in New York.As his interest in climbing grew he began to explore climbing in Wyoming, mostly near Lander and Jackson.Upon his retirement from the police force he moved to Lander in 1978.He ran a climbing shop for a while in Lander and worked with his good friend Terry Hayes.
Bill climbed Mount McKinley (Denali) and all the big mountains in the Pacific Northwest and some in Canada.He had numerous assents of the Grand Teton as well as other peaks in the Tetons, Wind Rivers and other Wyoming ranges.With three friends, Bill climbed Gannett Peak, the highest point in Wyoming in 1990 on the 100th anniversary of Wyoming statehood.
Bill avidly bagged most of the Colorado "fourteeners".In his later years he was often accompanied by his loving wife, June, whom he met on a mountain trail in the Tetons.
Bill loved music and was an accomplished drummer.As a youth Bill played with a band that made regular appearances on local television.Bill played with the Brad Iiams Band in Fremont Countyand often played with the Alumni and Friends Band in the 4th of July parade in Lander.
Bill was a devout Catholic and a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, June.
He is survived by two daughters, Sharon and Christina and a son, Stewart and numerous climbing friends who will always remember Bill as a steady belay.
A Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Lander.
