Wendell Victor Shields Sr, of Lander, died in his home on June 28, 2014 at the age of 85. A Celebration Memorial will be at 11:00 am, Monday, July 7, 2014 in the Chapel of Mount Hope, Hudson's Funeral Home, Lander, Wyoming.
Wendell Victor Shields, Sr. was born May 7, 1929 to Oliver & Paige Shields in Wellington, CO.He grew up in the Wellington & Bellevue, CO area and graduated from Cache La Poudre High School in 1948.He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1950 & spent time in Guam & Kwajalein Atoll-Marshall Islands.On June 22, 1952 he married the love of his life, Ruby Howerton.Together they had 3 children:Wendell Jr., Cherie & Stephanie.After several years in Colorado, Wendell & Ruby moved their family to Wyoming in 1970.Wendell began farming in the Pavillion area as well as working for Lucky Mc/Pathfinder Mines in Gas Hills.In 1980 the family moved to Lander.There Wendell pursued his dream of being a business owner.He had the opportunity to purchase an existing camera supply store; The Shutterbug.This purchase allowed two dreams to join as Wendell would combine his passion for photography and being a business owner.Wendell became actively involved in the Lander community & was a member of the Rotary Club, Lions Club as well as the Chamber of Commerce.Shields Camera Corral thrived in its existence until 1994 when Wendell retired.During his retirement Wendell & Ruby traveled in the Western United States to attend reunions & visit family.Most of all Wendell enjoyed being a grandfather & great-grandfather.
Wendell is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruby, daughter and son-in-law Stephanie & Chris Wright- Vancouver, WA, brother Oliver W. & Ada Shields Jr - Greeley, CO, sister Ruth Brubaker- Riverton, WY, grandchildren:Isaac & Joshua Manning - Lander, WY, Darci Converse - Gilford, NH, Victor & Alysa Wright- Vancouver, WA, great- grandchildren:Natasha Tillotson- Grants Pass, OR, Lyle Tillotson-Barre VT, Kelsey Tillotson- Littleton, NH, Lehana Guyette - Barre, VT, Stephanie Shields-Barre, VT, Teka Phillips-Gilford NH, Cherie Lynn, Nevaeh Tatum, Jaymee Rose Manning,Annabelle Marie & Lacy LeighMay Denevan-Lander, WY, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins & countless members of extended family as Wendell opened his heart & arms to many over the years!
He is preceded in death by his twin brother, James & sister Mabel of Colorado, brother Robert of Missouri, children Cherie Lynn Meyer of Lander WY & Wendell Shields Jr of Barre, Vermont, granddaughter Paula Sicely of Barre, Vermont.
