Walter B. Rogers, Sr., 92, died quietly at his home on Saturday, May 18, 2013.
Walter was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, to Mary and Burton Rogers. He graduated from Malden High School, Malden, MA, in1938.After high school, he worked for various transportation companies until enlisting in the Army the summer of 1942 where he served as a radio operator on a B-17 Bomber aircraft in the 8th Air Force, 351st Bomb Group. His company flew numerous missions over Europe until the end of World War II.
After discharge from the Army in 1945, Walter went to work for the New England Telephone Company installing commercial telephone systems (PBX, multi-line, etc.).He was responsible for emergency services for the telephone company and spent many long nights helping to restore service to customers up and down the eastern coast. He retired after 35 years in 1981.
Walter married Martha O'Brien in September of 1942. They had been married 60 years at the time of Martha's death in 2002.They had two children, Judy and Walter, Jr.
Walter and Martha moved the family to Saugus, MA, in 1947 where they were active in the community and the Cliftondale Methodist Church, established in 1852, where they served on the church's milestone anniversary celebrations.
After his retirement in 1981, Walter and Martha moved to Lander, WY, to be near their daughter,Judy Rogers who had established a career teaching elementary school until her retirement.
Walter established and financed the Popo Agie scholarship fund at the University of Wyoming for over 20 years.
Walter is survived by his daughter, Judy Rogers of Lander, and son, Walter B. Rogers, Jr., of Boise, ID; granddaughters Sandy Torres and her husband Tony, and Laurie Rogers of Washington state; and two great-grandsons, Mark and Jake Torres of Washington state.
There will be a viewing at Hudson's Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 22, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. where friends can greet the family.A Graveside Service will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Lander on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 11 a.m.In lieu of flowers, friends may make donationsto the Pet Connection,P.O. Box 854, Lander, WY 82520.
