Vincent Underwood, Sr. of Ethete died on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at the age of 68. Funeral services will be at 10:00am on Monday, June 1, 2009 at Blue Sky Hall in Ethete. Rosary will take place at 7:00pm on Sunday, May 31, 2009 at Blue Sky Hall with a wake following at his residence.

Vincent Underwood, Sr. was born on January 25, 1941. His Indian name was Kookteeniisebet, which means Spotted Horse.

He served on the Board of Trustees for the Arapahoe Ranch for the past 12 years. He served as a Security Officer for the Northern Arapaho Housing and the Investigative & Security Services. Mr. Underwood also served as a Detention Officer and Police Officer for the Bureau of Indian Affairs as well as a Game Warden for the Shoshone & Arapaho Joint tribes. He loved basketball both as a player and as a referring official for youth and high school basketball games as well as the independent tournaments. He made his home in the Mill Creek area and raised paint and quarter horses. He was very active and involved in his traditional ways. He was also a member of the Council of Elders and stressed the importance of Arapaho language revitalization. He was a strong supporter of the Arapaho Immersion School .

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Amelia. His sons Russell T. Underwood and his wife Josephine, Vincent T. Underwood, Jr. and his wife Mary, Carlton C.T. Underwood, Oliver Thomas Shakespeare and his wife Chalice, and Gaylen Littleshield and his wife Shawna; daughters Monica Addison and Moneta Arthur. Grandchildren Jared Underwood, Vincent Underwood III, Robert Underwood, Ambrose Underwood, Tristen Underwood, Aaron Underwood, Christina Underwood, Brandon Isiah West Underwood, Roquelle Carlie Troi Underwood, Josh George, Lorenzo Underwood, Jennifer Sitting Eagle, Pauline Sitting Eagle, Medalia Sitting Eagle, Leroy Sitting Eagle, Truman Sitting Eagle, Shianna Littleshield, Boss Littleshield, Saige Addison, Alyssa Addison, Talyn Addison and Anthony Addison, III, Daniel Whitebird, Alex Whitebird, Robert Arthur, Laurene Arthur and James "Sonny" Arthur, III. Great-granddaughters Quinn and Annissa Warren.

He is also survived by his sister-in-laws Bernice Watan, Jessie Spoonhunter and her husband Stanley, Alene Shakespeare and Lettie J. Spoonhunter. Brother-in-laws Leroy Shakespeare and O'dell Shakespeare and his wife Amelia. Brothers Nelson White, Sr., Crawford White, Sr., Dorsey Willow, Alfred Redman, Sr., Hubert Redman, Harley Hungry, Ray Underwood, John Underwood, Jerome Underwood, James Patrick Underwood and Martin Underwood, Jr. Sisters Matilda Bushyhead, Anita Hungry, Audrey Underwood, Mary Josephine Underwood, Patricia Underwood, Rebecca Miller, Kay Underwood, Alicia Underwood, Karen Trosper, Geraldine Underwood, Alvena Oldman, Lucy Willow and Laverne White. Numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, grandchildren and Sundance grandsons.

He is preceded in death by his parents Tom Underwood and Christina (Pine) Underwood, Josephine and Herbert White, uncle Martin Underwood, Sr. and aunt Philomena Underwood. Brother Wesley Underwood, Sr., Philbert Willow and Lynn White. Sister Dorothy White. Nephew Dwight "DeeDee" Ferris, Jr.
