Stephen William Platt

Dr. Stephen William Platt, aged 75, passed away peacefully in his home in Lander, WY, on July 27, 2025.

Stephen William Platt was born February 14, 1950, to Joseph Edwin (Bill) Platt and Tia Juana (Futrell) Platt in Ponca City, OK.

He grew up in Stillwater, OK, and graduated from C.E. Donart High School in 1968. He attended Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK, from 1968 to 1975, where he received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees. On May 23, 1970, he married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Reynolds. In 1975, they moved to Provo, UT, where Stephen earned his Ph.D. in Zoology. In 1981, Stephen moved his family to Rock Springs, where he worked for the Black Butte Coal Company. August of 1989, they relocated to Lander, WY, where Stephen worked for the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality-Land Division until his retirement.

Stephen received an Honorable Discharge from the Army National Guard of Oklahoma and Utah after serving six years.

Stephen is survived by his son Dustin Platt (Jennifer), his daughter Stephanie Platt (Vanessa), and his brother Gary Platt (Louise); grandchildren Daxton, Jasmine, and Danalee and nephew Chris Platt (Alesha) and niece Katie Hall (Jonathan).

Stephen's lifelong passion was falconry. He was a Master Falconer and had served as President of the Wyoming Chapter of the North American Falconers' Association. He was also involved with the Sage Grouse Working Group.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at the Chapel of Mount Hope, Hudson's Funeral Home, located at 680 Mount Hope Drive, Lander, Wyoming 82520.
