Shirley Ann Smith, age 90, of Lander, Wyoming, passed away surrounded by her loving family on May 6, 2025.
Born on July 16, 1934, in her family home in Roslyn, South Dakota, Shirley was the cherished daughter of John and Marjorie Hanson coming from a strong Norwegian lineage. After graduating from Roslyn High School in 1953, she ventured to Rapid City, where her bright spirit and strong work ethic led her to working in a dental office and waitressing at a cafe. It was there that she met the love of her life, Ralph "Dale" Smith, an assistant manager with Singer Sewing Machines. Their bond was instant and they were married on December 4, 1953. They were married during a memorable snowstorm that Shirley always recalled as the most snow she had ever seen. Their beautiful union spanned 50 years until Dale's passing in 2003.
Together, Shirley and Dale were blessed with two children, Ralph and Marjorie, who became the center of her world. In time, the family made their home in Lander, Wyoming, where Shirley built a remarkable career as office manager for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, retiring in 1995.
Shirley was known far and wide for her radiant personality and her remarkable gift for making everyone feel like the most important person in the room. She formed deep and lasting friendships wherever she went. Her passions included cooking delicious meals, playing a good game of cards, dancing whenever she had the chance—especially to a lively polka—and gathering with friends at the Lander Elks Club. Of all the holidays, the Fourth of July held a special place in her heart. Her home became the joyful center of grand celebrations where all were welcome. Shirley had an open heart and an open door, always ready to lend a helping hand and ensure that everyone felt comfortable, cared for, and at home.
She is lovingly survived by her two children, Ralph Smith and Marjorie Hornecker; her son-in-law, Skip Hornecker; daughter-in-law, Pat Ottersbach; sisters, Sheila Van Meter and Nancy Rinn, seven beloved grandchildren, Heath Hornecker, John Hornecker, Lindsey Hornecker-Logue, Misty Wollam, Rocky Smith, Annie Smith, and Tony Ottersbach; fifteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren, along with countless others who affectionately called her "Friend", "Mom" "Grandma" or "Grandma Great". She now reunites in peace with her beloved husband, Dale; her siblings, Sonny and Skippy Hanson, and Janice Aadland; her dear parents, John and Marjorie Hanson; and many treasured family members and friends who went before her.
A memorial service to honor Shirley's remarkable life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on May 13th at Faith Lutheran Church in Lander, Wyoming. A burial will immediately follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, with a reception at the Lander Inn where friends and family are invited to gather and celebrate her legacy.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Lander Pet Connection or Faith Lutheran Church in her name.
Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing that Shirley's kindness, warmth, and joyful spirit will continue to shine in all those whose lives she touched. Her love was a gift, and her memory will be a blessing forever.
