Sarah Ann Cadman

May 16, 1911 — June 24, 2010

Sarah Ann Daems (Sadie) Cadman died Thursday, June 24, 2010, at Westward Heights Care Center in Lander where she had been a resident since September 2007. She was 99 years old. Closed casket visitation will be on Monday, June 28, 2010 starting at 1:00pm. A Funeral Service will follow beginning at 2:00pm.  Both visitation and Funeral Services will be at Hudson's Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Lander.

Sadie was born on the Daems family homestead at Varney near Ennis, Montana, May 16, 1911. She was the daughter of Henry DeBeauregand Daems and Nancy Ann Dunn, both of whom were from early Montana pioneer families. She was the 11 th child born in a family of 12. She grew up on the ranch and was actively engaged in the work that included herding cattle and milking cows. She once said the only thing she ever stole was a horse! It had appeared on the ranch unbranded and unclaimed. Her dad told her she could keep it if she could break it - and she did. Years later she could still be seen riding along with a herd of cattle and doing tricks on her pony.

She attended elementary school in a one room stone school house on the bench overlooking the two room cabin where she was born and reared. On June 10, 1928, she was married to Gerald (Jerry) Cadman in Ennis, Montana. In about 1939 they moved with their five children to Bearcreek, Montana where Jerry worked in the coal mines. Eight years later twin boys were added to the mix.

Jerry was employed as a mine mechanic which took them from Bearcreek to

several other mining communities including Kenilworth, Utah, Nye, Montana, Jeffrey City, Wyoming and finally Lander, Wyoming in 1962.

Sadie had some interesting jobs in the early years which included milking eight cows morning and evening for which the pay was milk and cream for her family. She also delivered a daily newspaper for several years over about a five mile route through Bearcreek and surrounding communities on foot. She was employed as a cook in the Jeffrey City School and later at Bishop Randall Hospital in Lander.

In 1993 Sadie was honored with a Special Recognition by the Lander Women's Bowling Association and named to the local Hall of Fame with a Member Emeritus Award. She had received three special written awards from Or. Fred Heryford for keeping score and helping the State Training School Clients with their bowling and with Special Olympics. She was busy at age 81 bowling on five different bowling leagues, was Sgt-at-Arms of Lander Women's Bowling Association for four years and served as vice president. Her highest game was 213 and highest series was 504. She had a collection of about 10 bowling balls. If one wouldn't work, she had another one that would! She continued to bowl well past her 90 th birthday. It is fair to say that Bowling was her passion in her later years.

Survivors include Lenore E. Van, Wayne (Lynne) Cadman, Ted (Barbie) Cadman and Sollie (Claudette) Cadman all of Lander, 23 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Sadie is preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, her parents, 11 siblings, three children, Betty KendalI, Gerald Cadman, Alpha Thormahlen and her precious little dog, Lady.
