Sam Passed away on Saturday, May 21st, 2011 at his home on North Fork Road near Fort Washakie surrounded by family and loved ones, he was 74 years old. Sam was born April 10, 1937 in Fort Washakie to Benjamin and Nancy Snyder. He attended school at the Countryman school at the end of North Fork road, and FCVHS in Lander, Wyoming. He joined the army in 1958, and served 4 years as a paratrooper and diesel mechanic. He married Belverda Meyers on October 21, 1961. He worked for US Steel at the mine on South Pass in 1962 and worked until his hire at the BIA in Fort Washakie. He went to work for the BIA roads Department in 1969 as a diesel mechanic, where he worked until he retired in 1994.
Sam enjoyed being with his family and friends, bowling, fishing, hunting, and just being outside. He had lived his life full of "vim, vigor, and vitality". With a mischievous smile he went about always looking for something to do. Whenever anyone would come around they would be put to work at some point making changes around the house, working outside or trailing off somewhere. Sam touched many lives over the years, showing many young people how to take care of their families, homes and vehicles. There was usually something to be learned when he was having one work with him to accomplish a task.
There are many tales of his astounding feats of daring do with his trusty steed, a green 1966 Ford Bronco, the tales are stories of legend. When one mentions him and his Bronco there is always a fond smile and a story to be told of some sort of peril, being stuck or being bounced around in the interior of the sturdy little Bronco. Thankfully they both slowed down over the years as many of us could probably not have taken much more of fun and adventure that they both dished out.
