Russell Elbert Collins, 86, of Lander, died Wednesday, January 28, 2015. A visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday, February 2, at the First Baptist Church, 339 Sweetwater St., in Lander. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 2, at the First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lander.
Russell was born to Roy Everett and Olevia Nadine (Thronburg) Collins in Thermopolis, Wyoming on January 25, 1929. Russell worked as a cowboy on local ranches in the Thermopolis area at an early age. He met his future wife, Juanita, on a trip to Oklahoma to break horses. Russell and Juanita married January 12, 1950 in Vinita, Oklahoma. They returned to Wyoming where he worked as a government trapper in the Casper area. Later, Russell worked road construction operating heavy equipment throughout the State of Wyoming. He worked for WYDOT over the next 20 years and retired in Dubois, Wyoming.
Russell and Juanita moved to Lander, Wyoming, in 1991 and enjoyed the community. Russell enjoyed hunting and shooting sports. Russell truly enjoyed visiting with his many friends and he never knew a stranger.
Russell was a member of Wyoming Lodge No. 2 AF & AM, Lander, Wyoming; Lander Valley Sportsmen's Association; Wyoming Archaeological Society; and the NRA.
Russell is survived by his sister Reba Odde of Thermopolis, Wyoming; brother Roy Keith Collins (Joyce) of Mountain View, Wyoming and his son Ron Collins (Marcia) of Riverton, Wyoming; his two grandchildren Danielle Marie Dalton (Mike) of Green River, Wyoming and Ashlea Davis of McKinnon, Wyoming andseveral great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Juanita, brother Leland, two sisters Lillie Stockman and Polly Ann Davis, and daughter Yolonda "Lonnie" Rich.
