Roland Nickolas "Nick" Eckes

Roland Nickolas Nick Eckes, of Lander, Wyoming died on June 1, 2018 at the Wind River Rehabilitation and Wellness Center in Riverton, Wyoming. A Visitation will be at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Lander on Monday, June 4, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary to start at 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Luncheon will follow the Mass at the Parish Hall. Roland Nick Eckes will be buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lander.

Roland Nickolas Nick Eckes, Lander resident since 1966. He was born on September 26, 1933 in Wahpeton, North Dakota to Nickolas and Hattie Eckes. He graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1951, North Dakota School of Science in 1952, and served in the US Navy from 1952 to 1956.

After serving in the US Navy for four years, he worked for the Railway Post Office, Weather Bureau in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and Pan American Airways on the Guided Missile Range out of Cape Canaveral, Florida from 1957 to 1962 as a weatherman. He served in the West Indies, Africa and Brazil. In 1962 he came back to the Weather Bureau and worked in Rapid City, South Dakota and transferred to Lander, Wyoming in 1966. Nick retired from the National Weather Service after 33 years of service.

He married Joyce Livermont in Rapid City on August 21, 1965. They had two children, Rhonda Rae and Linda Marie and have four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Nick died a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church having served on the parish council and finance committee.He was also in charge of the usher schedule for 40 years and served as an usher for 45 years.He joined the Knights of Columbus in 1952 and had worked the bingo team for 39 years.He had been a District Deputy and was in charge of the Tootsie Roll Program for the state of Wyoming for 17 years.Nick was also elected the Knight of the Year for the State of Wyoming in 1999 and recruited over 200 members into the Knights of Columbus.He was very proud to be a Knights of Columbus member.He is also a member of the American Legion.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing, metal detecting, furniture refinishing, and hunting artifacts.He enjoyed the great outdoors that Wyoming has to offer.

Nick is survived by, his wife Joyce and two children Rhonda (Craig) Johnson of Lander and Linda (Ernest) Evans of Riverton.He has four grandchildren, Nickolas (Carrie) Johnson, Christopher (Taylor) Johnson, Joseph Lake and Jacob Lake and three great grandchildren, Lindsey, Callie, and Sterling Johnson.He is also survived by his sister, Judy (Jim) Blain, from Sioux Falls, SD.He leaves behind a multitude of loyal and caring friends.
