Roger B. Linnell passed away at Sage West Hospital in Lander on Nov. 9, 2015 at the age of 91.Graveside Service will take place at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 19th at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lander.
Roger was born in Sebeka, Minnesota on May 23, 1924 to Robert and Mildred Linnell.He had one older sister Marjorie. Roger grew up working on the family farm and attended a small one room country school through the eighth grade.He graduated from Sebeka High School.
On May 25, 1944 Roger enlisted in the regular Navy and served on three ships, first being the destroyer escort U.S.S. Kainer D.E.331; the second was the U.S.S. Stevenson D.D. 645 which took him to Pearl Harbor, Leyte Gulf, Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Tokyo Bay, and from there headed home by way of Malay Peninsula, Singapore, Colombo, Ceylon, Cape Town South Africa and passed the Statue of Liberty on the way to Pier 91 in Brooklyn, New York.The ship was then sent to Charleston South Carolina.After serving on U.S.S. Braine D.D. 630, Roger was honorably discharged on Nov. 15, 1946 with two bronze battle stars and went home to Sebeka.
Roger moved to California and worked for Lockheed Air Craft Co.While there, he became acquainted with Paul Chambers from Lander.They both came back to Lander and worked for Chamber Brothers Contractors building houses.Roger bought a gas station in Thermopolis and ran it for several years. On April 5th 1952 he moved back to Lander and went to work for Northern Utilities (the gas company) as a service man.In 1962, Roger was promoted to manager of the Lander area; the position he held until retiring in June 1987, a little over 25 years.
In 1954, Roger married Margaret McClellan.To this union was born a daughter, Sue and a son Johnny.The low point was the loss of Sue at the age of 20.
Roger was a 17 year member of the Lander Volunteer Fire Dept, Boy Scout Master of Troop 17,50 year member of the Masonic lodge,a member of the Baptist church and the Squaw Creek Cultural Club (Liar's Club).His hobbies included hunting, metal work, making spurs and bridle bits.
Roger is survived by his wife of 61 years Margaret, son Johnny and wife Leane of Riverton and several nieces and nephews.
