Robert James Calhoun, 87, of Crowheart, WY, died on September 18, 2026, at home surrounded by family. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 28, 2026, at the Crowheart Fire Department (the small building across from the Crowheart store).
Robert James Calhoun was born on January 26, 1939, to Joseph Calhoun and Josephine Veda Calhoun in Fort Washakie, Fremont County, Wyoming.
Robert was a rodeo cowboy and known for his roping skills (he was a championship team roper). He gave up rodeo life and started a family. His pride and joy was “the Calhoun Ranch” and family. He raised cattle and horses along with his children. His favorite pastime was fishing, going to the mountains, hunting, more fishing, and gambling. You could often find him at a casino if he was not fishing.
Robert is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Calhoun; his mother, Josephine Veda Calhoun; and his 8 siblings Kate, Virginia, Pauline, Norma, Leona, Marilyn, Emma, and Melvin.
Survivors include his children Natalie James and her husband Curt James, Marlo Calhoun and Robert Calhoun, and his wife Holly Calhoun. Along with multiple cousins, nieces, nephews, and on down their family lines. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be mailed directly to Central Bank & Trust to the “Calhoun Ranch” account or to Natalie James at 2581 Owl Creek Rd., Thermopolis, WY 82443, or P.O. Box 712, Fort Washakie, WY 82514.
