Norman Wayne Halbert
February 4, 1930 – April 29, 2025
Norman Wayne Halbert, a beloved father, grandfather, Uncle and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on April 29, 2025.
Born on February 4, 1930, in Bartlett, Kansas, Norman was the son of Wesley Clay and Cora Halbert. In 1939, the family relocated to Magic Valley, Idaho, and later moved to Homedale, Idaho, in 1946. Norman graduated from Homedale High School in 1950, and shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving honorably until his discharge in 1954.
In the mid-1950s, Norman began his career with Mountain Bell and moved to Lander, Wyoming, where he met the love of his life, Estelle O'Neal, and her young son, Billy. They married in 1957 and soon welcomed two daughters, Trena in 1958 and Tami in 1959.
Norman's career took the family to Cheyenne, Wyoming, in 1962 and later to Ontario, Oregon, in 1971 to be closer to his parents. In 1978, they returned to Cheyenne, where Norman eventually retired. Retirement didn't slow him down—Norman kept busy by working as a school bus driver, a job that brought him much joy. The children adored him, often requesting that he drive their activity buses. During the summer, Norman also drove for the Hot Shot firefighters. Norman's life was one of service, love, and community, and he will be remembered for the countless lives he touched along the way.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley Clay and Cora Halbert, as well as all of his siblings: Jay, Clark, Bob, Amos, Ethel, Nancy, Emma Jean, and Linda. He lost his loving wife, one month prior to his death.
Norman is survived by his children: Billy (Tish) O'Neal, Trena (Mike) Fries, and Tami (Carl) Mangum; his bonus children, Troy and Kathy Latinis, and Greg and Cathy Hampton; grandchildren: Troy (Torah) O'Neal, Cheyne (Chelsea) O'Neal, Ty (Shannon) O'Neal, and Tia (Isaiah) Holladay; bonus grandchildren Breezy (Mike) O'Connor and Jacob Latinis; and 19 great-grandchildren, all of whom will deeply miss his kindness, wisdom, and sense of humor.
A celebration of life honoring Norman, his wife Estelle and her sister, Shirley Latinis will be held at Hudson's Funeral Home in Lander Wyoming on Tuesday, July 8 at 11:00 AM. A reception will follow, with details to be announced at the service. Food will be served. All who knew and loved Norm, Estelle and Shirley are warmly invited to come share memories and stories.
