Marian Colleen Scott

October 13, 1944 — April 17, 2025

Our dearly beloved mom, grandma, great grandma, sister, aunt, Marian, passed away on April 17, 2025, in Billings, Montana.  Marian was born on October 13, 1944, in Fort Washakie, Wyoming, to Joseph and Regina Pine Arthur.  One of nine children, Marian grew up at the family home in Mill Creek, Wyoming, where she spent most of her life.  She loved all her siblings, being one of the three sisters out of six brothers, she was able to do almost anything her older brothers could do.  Her sister Ruth and she could change a part on a vehicle or, at one time, as their brothers were "indisposed"! They set up their family camp for sundance by themselves!

Momma was an avid fan of both the Wyoming Indian Chiefs and Lady Chiefs sports, having at one time won Fan of the Year.  She enjoyed watching not only her grandchildren play, but all the children play due to her being the Northern Arapaho Culture teacher at Wyoming Indian Elementary school for an estimated twenty-seven years, she watched them all grow up.  You could find her sitting in her special spot, attending the games as much as she could.  She was also a fan of the Denver Broncos football team.

She was one of the most fluent and inspirational speakers for the Northern Arapaho Tribe.  Along with her nephew, Sam Dresser, they gave many children their Northern Arapaho Indian names.  The day before she passed away, the family was informed that the new language app was completed, which she was a big part of.  Marian was always proud of her language and encouraged the children she taught to speak the language and to never forget it.  As some of her great-grandchildren lived with her, she talked to them in Arapaho all the time, and her great-grandson, Emryn Stephen, who she also named after her brother, is very good at speaking Arapaho.  At one time, all her grands and greats were taught by her in school, which shows how long she taught and how important it was to her to save the language.  She would also attend the conference in Boulder, Colorado, with Nora and William, to discuss and encourage the teaching, speaking, and saving of the Arapaho language.

Our mom loved being and doing anything and everything.  She enjoyed being at the powwows, where she was a member of numerous committees.  When her children were young, she made all their outfits so that they could participate.  As they grew older, she taught them how to make and sew them on their own.  She came from a powwow family, as everyone would pack up after school ended and be gone most of the summer, traveling from powwow to powwow.  She enjoyed being with her friends, going to the basketball games, casino…but most of all her family!  Her family meant everything to her, and she meant everything to her family. Our dear mother will be missed every day by all who loved her.
