Margaret A. Mewes

Margaret A. Mewes, 88, passed away peacefully at Westward Heights Care Center in Lander, WY, on June 20, 2025.

Margaret was born and raised in Cheyenne, WY. As a young lady, she once worked at the Plains Hotel as an elevator operator, where she met many interesting people.

Bowling was her first love, along with cheering for the Broncos and reading a good Harlequin romance novel. If she wasn't betting at the dog races with Grandma, she was spending weekends camping and fishing with family and friends.

She was a stay-at-home mom who raised her four children with a stern hand. Her old-school parenting style wasn't always appreciated at the time, but it shaped who we became. In the summer, she would cook fried chicken on the outdoor cookstove—a special treat for the whole family.

Later in life, traveling became a passion. She visited new places, had a great time, and especially enjoyed the casinos—from Black Hawk to Las Vegas.

Margaret is preceded in death by her mother, Marian E. (Hewitt) Babcock; her husband, Hugh Mewes; her sons, Michael E. Allen and Christopher Lee Nelson; her grandson, Jeremiah Allen; her uncle, Johnny Hewitt; her aunt, Margaret (Hewitt) Hook; and her cousins, Jimmy and John "Rocky" Hewitt.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryle (Dave) Tafoya; her son, John (Michelle) Nelson; daughter-in-law, Debby Nelson; grandchildren, Nicholas (Dana) Tafoya, Tarah (Ryan) Anderson, Joshua Allen-Chapa, Gene Allen-Kurpis, Christopher Nelson, and Jordan (André) Salazar; great-grandchildren, Orion and Gabriel Tafoya, André A. Salazar, Skylee Nelson, Kilynn, Sienna, Vanden, and Hazel Kurpis; and great-great-granddaughter, Millie Jo Tafoya.

Cremation has taken place, and a family celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Our family would like to thank all of the staff at Westward Heights Care Center and Enhabit Hospice for the love and care they gave to her and our entire family. We are deeply grateful.
