Margaret Louise Mcgee

Margaret Louise McGee died November 1, 2015 in Lander. She had celebrated her 90th birthday inSeptember.
Margaret was born in Casper and lived there until her family moved to Eugene, Oregon when she was twelve. Her father, John was a chemist who worked for Standard Oil. Her mother, Louise, taught home economics and nutrition. She had a younger brother, John.
She had relatives on her mother's side living in Cheyenne. Her grandfather, John W. Lacey was the defense attorney for Tom Horn. Her great uncle, Willis Van Devanter was an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
After graduating from the Univ. of Oregon with a degree in journalism, Margaret studied Spanish in Mexico City before working for the U.S. Foreign Service, first in Peru and later in Yugoslavia. She returned home to study law in Oregon and the Univ. of Washington. Margaret worked as a lawyer in Oregon and Wyoming. Margaret lived in Cave Junction, Oregon until her parents passed. She moved to Lander in the early 80s, where she resided for the rest of her life.
Margaret loved the mountains in general and the Wind Rivers in particular. She loved geology and natural history. She was an avid gardener and the sworn enemy of any dandelion that raised its head on her lawn. She enjoyed hunting, mostly antelope and deer, and at least one elk.
She supported a number of organizations, Doctors Without Borders, and the Wyoming Outdoor Council to name a few. In 1976 she donated 200 acres of her land in Oregon to triple the size of the Illinois River Forks State Park.
Margaret was a private person and lived much of her later life in Lander by herself with her beloved German Shepherd, Bobbie, and cats, Domino, Timmy, and Penny. She had an amiable and optimistic personality, and a wicked sense of humor. She was a role model for facing the challenges of aging with dignity and grace, and will be greatly missed by those of us who had the pleasure of knowing her.
