Loy Jacklyn Megeath Aho, 91, of Lander passed away peacefully on November 9, 2016 at Westward Heights Care Center where she spent the last 5 years of her life. Memorial services will be held at the Lander First United Methodist Church at 1 PM on Wednesday, November 16, 2016, lunch following at the Lander Catholic College cafeteria.Memorial contributions may be made to the Lander Pet Connection or Lander Food Bank or to a food bank or animal rescue organization near you.
Loy was raised in Mountain View by her foster parents, Millie and Jeff Davis where she grew up as a "ranch girl" riding horses and herding sheep.Her passion for community involvement began in high school and she became secretary of the Rural Electrification Co. while still a senior.She graduated from high school in 1943 in Mountain View, WY then moved to Rock Springs, WY where she worked at the Rock Springs airport as a weather observer for the US Weather Bureau during WWII. She met and married Raymond J Aho who was airport manager. Loy worked for 20 years in Rock Springs as a Girl Scout leader, a 4-H leader, and a Sunday school teacher for the Rock Springs Congregational Church.She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Mountain Lily Chapter #10 where she held many offices, including that of Worthy Matron and was awarded lifetime membership.
Loy was an activist for her community in Rock Springs.Her many contributions included:President of the Rock Springs United Council of Church Women; President of Rock Springs Woman's Club; served on the Western Wyoming Community College advisory board; chaired the Rock Springs beautification project for Wyoming Federated Women's Clubs.Her theme during her tenure as president of Wyoming Federated Women's Clubs was "Environmental Responsibility" and she spoke to local service clubs about the wisdom of preventing pollution rather than trying to clean it up.She served as Council President for the PTA and was part of the Citizen's Commission for establishing a Western Wyoming college, becoming the secretary for the committee to establish the Western Wyoming college.She served also on the committee to establish the Sweetwater Counseling Service and received two appointments to the Mental Health Board in Rock Springs.Other tasks she accepted were Chair of the South West Counseling Service Board, President of the Community Concerts Association, Wyoming Council of Girl Scouts, President of the Women's Fellowship of the Rock Springs Congregational Church, president of the Rock Springs United Council of Churchwomen, deaconess of the First Congregation/United Church of Christ and secretary for 10 years of the building committee for the church, a feat finally accomplished in 1970.She served on the Wyoming Humanities Council and as director of Marketing and Consumer Services of Sweetwater Health Services.
Loy took a job with Glenview Travel Agency based in Chicago, Illinois while she lived in Rock Springs and became their Director of Public Relations while also conducting tours to Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Alaska and the Caribbean.
Loy loved to write and became editor for 2 publications, the Wyoming Clubwoman Magazine and Trail Blazer, a state publication for the Wyoming Council of Girl Scouts.She also was an outstanding seamstress and chaired various sewing competitions for young women.This skill served her well in 1976 when she purchased Marguerite's store in downtown Rock Springs and opened Loy's Bridal Shoppe which later moved out to the then new shopping center west of town.She joined the Chamber of Commerce and became president in 1982-83.
After closing the bridal shop, Loy moved to Sacramento, CA where she became a licensed real estate agent and qualified for the Million Dollar Club in 1993.She later moved to Lander, WY to be near her mother, Abby Hamilton, sister Roberta Palmer, brothers Dick and Bill Hamilton.She worked various jobs through the Fremont County senior services for the Lander Art Center, Lander High School, Museum of the American West, Fremont County drug court.
She is survived by one daughter, Phyllis Muniz and son-in-law Manny Muniz of Lander; grandson, Brian Kriz, Fair Oaks, CA; granddaughter Aimee Kriz, Lander; sister Roberta Palmer, Lander; brother Bill Hamilton, Lyons Valley Rd., Lander; sister Ethelyn St. John, Sheridan, WY.
