John James Laird

John James Laird, Sr., 84, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully departed this world on May 16, 2026, in his hometown of Lander, Wyoming, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s. Born December 10, 1941, to Albert and Bertie (Wallace) Laird in Lander, John was a life long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and lived his life to the fullest, dedicating it to his family and serving others.

After graduating from the University of Wyoming, John began his career as an elementary educator, teaching in eastern Wyoming and starting a family. (This, along with six years spent in northeastern Washington, were the only times he was away from Lander.) He returned to Lander in 1984 and was soon hired at Wyoming Indian Elementary School. John retired from teaching in 2001, after more than 30 years shaping young minds.

John enjoyed spending time outdoors—something he passed on to his kids. He also loved traveling, often visiting family and friends. From Hawaii to Florida, no distance was too great, and no detour too long, to reunite with loved ones. He was always ready to lend a hand—whether helping his kids move across the country or pitching in to support others here in Lander.

He was preceded in death by his father, Albert, his mother, Bertie, his brother, Albert Otis and sister-in-law Elva. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Carol Harper; his children, John James “Jamie” Laird, Jr. (Amy), Sarah Schlosser, Jeremy Laird (Nicole), Jeffrey Laird, and Joel Laird (Jen). He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren; Christina (Warren), Cody, Amanda, Jacob (Tierney), Jackson, Arlo, Joel, Sandra Eve, Bri, Josie, William, Wyatt, and Kinsley; great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and countless cousins. His memory will live on through his family and friends, whose lives he greatly influenced and enriched through his unwavering love and support.

A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 22, 2026 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 653 Cascade St., Lander, Wyoming 82520. In lieu of flowers, get to know your neighbors and be of service to them.
