John Louis Holford

July 17, 1967 — March 1, 2021

Lander

John Louis Holford, 53, passed away at home in Lander, WY on March 1, 2021.

John was born in Oconomowoc, WI and was raised in Green Bay, WI. He and his siblings grew up during the time where you drank water from the garden hose, ran amok with your neighborhood gang of friends, and didn't come back inside until dusk.

After graduating from Premontre High School, John set his sights on new adventures and moved to Vail, CO and eventually called Lander, WY home. Lander was the idyllic setting for all of John's passions, which included flyfishing, hunting, snowboarding, rock climbing and hiking. He even became a "rock hound" like his mother, and whenever she visited, they were sure to go in search of fossils, arrowheads, and agates. John never let his mom go home empty handed- even if it meant hauling "boulders" several miles through the mountains so she could take some mementos home.

John was also an avid book reader. We always blamed his bad eyesight on staying up way too late and reading in the dark, starting with comic books as a kid, graduating to Louis L'amour and Zane Grey westerns as a young adult, and then on to every possible genre from there as an adult.

One of Tyler's fondest memories with his father is working on dad's beloved Nova together listening to music. Zane will miss his Sunday morning walks to breakfast where John would have his bacon and eggs (save a piece for Vega!) and the walk home together. Meghan cherished her early mornings with her dad, arguing politics, books and learning how to be the person she is today over a cup of coffee.

John married Marcy Holford on December 17, 2011 and together they enjoyed long drives, looking for wildlife, and finding uncharted roads to explore. They enjoyed bowling league and good pizza with beer, even if it meant a sporadic trip hours away.

John was compassionate in his work, serving 30 years as a direct support professional, shop industry supervisor, and staff development instructor at the Wyoming Life Resource Center.

John was greeted in Heaven by his grandparents Louis and Norine Van Den Heuvel. No doubt they were surprised to see him, but also very happy because John and his grandpa were especially close. They probably will reminisce about a juicy hamburger from Marc's Big Boy or talk about chopping wood for the wood pile.

John is survived by his beloved parents Mark and Nona Schley of Green Bay, WI; his children Tyler Holford and Zane Holford of Lander, WY and Meghan Holford of Cheyenne, WY; his wife Marcy Holford of Lander, WY; his siblings Timothy (Barb) Holford, Matthew (Kim) Holford, and Rachael Holford (Luis Perez) all of Green Bay, WI; his uncle and aunt Peter and Rita Van Den Heuvel of Oneida; his grandsons Roland Holford, Kurt Holford, Beckham Holford; and his nieces Constance Cotter, Haley Holford, Nada Holford, Samantha Holford, Abby Holford, Kinleigh Clouser, and Alicia Clouser.

John's absence in our lives will be a heartache that never goes away, but we have an abundance of amazing memories that will pave the way for solace and peace as we take one day at a time.
