Joe N. Poe

September 2, 1928 — December 30, 2023

Joe N. Poe, (95) of Lander Wyoming passed away peacefully, with his wife and daughter by his side, on Saturday, December 30, 2023.

Joe was born to Parks Poe and Veda Martin Poe on September 2, 1928, in Cisco, Texas.  He married Ferne Lavelle Justice in July of 1950; they celebrated their 73rd anniversary in 2023.

Joe received his Bachelor's degree in Business from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. He worked for Cabot Oil in Pampa, Texas for 9 years and then for 3 more years in Glenrock, Wyoming. Joe always wanted to live in Alaska. He made it as far as Lander, Wyoming where he worked for US Steel until he was offered a job at the Wyoming State Training School where he spent the next 22 years. Joe retired from the Wyoming State Training School in 1987 and then went to work for Fremont Motors for 3 years doing everything from selling cars to transporting cars all over the state of Wyoming. Joe and his wife, Ferne, ran a ranch south of Lander for 27 years while both of them worked full-time jobs.

Joe played football in high school and always looked forward to football season. Being from Texas, he was a never-wavering Dallas Cowboys fan. Joe loved his time running the ranch and was always reminiscing about his days "at the Ranch" and his trusted dog Killer.

He shared his love of animals with his daughters and grandchildren. He spent much of his free time hunting and fishing with good friends. He loved the Wind River Mountains and took many fishing and hunting trips with his son Wes. He enjoyed telling stories about all of his adventures and usually had everyone laughing by the end. Later in his life, he would say with sadness, "I outlived all my hunting and fishing buddies". Joe enjoyed helping to host the One Shot Antelope Hunt for many years and was a big supporter of Ducks Unlimited. Joe was devoted to his family and fiercely protective of them all.

Joe is survived by his wife of 73 years, Ferne. His sister, Kay Sikes of El Campo, Texas. His daughter, Lesli Bartell (Kent Simon) of Lander, daughter, Susie Link (Bryan) of Las Vegas, Nevada, and daughter-in-law, Jeri Poe of Lander. Grandchildren, Jolie (Adrienne) Connolly-Poe, Aimee Moore, Jeff (Ashley) Link, and Mike Link. Great Grandsons Blaike Kandler, Logan Moore, Tavish Moore, and Great Granddaughter Linley Link.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Parks and Veda Poe of Eastland, Texas. His son, Wes Poe of Lander. And brother-in-law, Bob Sikes of El Campo, Texas.

A graveside service will be held in the summer of 2024 at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lander.

Donations in Joe's memory may be made directly to The First Baptist Church, 339 Sweetwater St, Lander, Wyoming 82520.
