Joan Gale Nix

Former Lander resident Joan G. Nix died on Monday, May 31, 2010, in Austin, Texas, of complications due to cancer. She was 69 years old.


There will be a time of remembrance at Hudson's Funeral Home in Lander from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday June 10.


Funeral services, followed by graveside burial at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lander, will be at 10 a.m. on Friday June 11, at the funeral home.


Joan Gale Murray was born in Hawthorne, Calif., on October. 4, 1940, and lived in the Los Angeles area until moving to Lander with her family in 1956.


After graduating from Fremont County Vocational High School in Lander in 1958, she attended Montana State College where she earned a Bachelor's degree in biology.


She married Verlan Nix in 1961 and had five children.


Mrs. Nix taught school at all levels from elementary through college, but her family said she derived her greatest joy from teaching the Bible.


Mrs. Nix is survived by her five children, Delayne Johnson, David Nix, Kevin Nix, Kendra Thomsen, and Ken Nix; her sister, Doris Murray, and nine grandchildren.
