Jerry Robert Childers

February 8, 1946 — May 11, 2022

Jerry Robert Childers was born in Wendell, Idaho to Walter Childers and Kathryn Homan Childers on February 8, 1946. He passed away on May 11, 2022 in his Lander home.
Jerry graduated from Natrona High School in 1964 and served in the US Army in Panama and Vietnam. Jerry owned Intermountain Manufacturing, where he met local metal/ welding needs, and fabricated mine equipment and trailers of his design. He created a horse trailer brand, La Pletche. By his account, it was named after a man that was a donkey, and "…all good vehicles should be named after an animal." Jerry was proud to have taught Motorsports Fabrication and welding for several years at WyoTech in Laramie, and he enjoyed each of his classes and loved his students. In Jerry's free time, he enjoyed going on drives with his wife, which usually ended with a pop or an ice cream, target practicing with his sons, and camping. Jerry also enjoyed fishing and his biggest "catch" was his own thumb and a trip to the ER to have the hook removed (the fish got away). Jerry loved spending time with his granddaughter, exchanging Planet of the Apes one-liners, and collecting shot glasses with his grandson. His granddaughter enjoyed his playful sayings: "Guess what?" "What?" "You guessed it!" In Jerry's retirement years, he and a good friend, Sally, raised cattle and most of the heifers were named by the two of them. Jerry was a skilled craftsman in both metal and wood. Several bookshelves, hutches, desks, and lamps in the Childers' home were his wooden creations. He had plans to make his daughter a hope chest, and whenever he was asked about it, his response would be, "That is why you call it a Hope Chest, you hope that it gets finished."

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Kathryn, his brother Clifford Childers, and his step-son Robert. Jerry is survived by Cheryl, his wife of 49 years, brothers Vernon Childers of Moore, Idaho and David Childers of Casper, WY, his sons Shaun Morrell of Washington DC, Justin Childers of Longview, WA, Jake Childers of Sweetwater, TX, and daughter and son-in-law JoDee and Leroy Cazarez of Amarillo, TX. Jerry was blessed with eight grandchildren: Nicholet, Ian, Caleb, Ryleigh, Meghan, Lillian, Reace, and Carmendee.

A special thank you to the caregivers at Westward Heights Care Center, the staff at Wind River Dialysis Center, and his housekeeper, Jeannie, who laughed at his jokes, took his ornery streak and stubbornness in stride, and truly cared for him.
