James Howard Huff Jr. died of natural causes on May 20, 2014 at his home in Lander, Wyoming where he lived with his son and daughter in law. He was 96.
Howard was born on December 2, 1917 in Athens, Georgia. He attended the University of Georgia, graduating with a degree in journalism in 1938.He met Vivian, the love of his life, at the university. They were married for 71 years.
Howard worked for United Press and the Augusta Chronicle before the war.In 1940 he joined the Army. He was sent to Europe for the D-Day invasion, landing on Utah Beach and leading a platoon in combat for 21 days before being wounded.He earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. After the war he served in the Army Reserves, retiring as a Major.
After the war he worked for Collins Printing Co. In 1955 he and Vivian moved to Chamblee, Georgia and started Huff Printing Company, which they operated for 35 years. They raised two sons, Jimmy and Andy. Howard was an active member of Northwoods United Methodist Church and the Chamblee-Doraville Kiwanis Club. They lived in Chamblee for 55 years before moving to Wyoming.
Howard was an avid golfer and longtime member of the Berkley Hills Golf Club. One of the highlights of his life was covering the Masters Golf Tournament as a reporter in 1939. He loved University of Georgia football and Atlanta Braves baseball.
Howard was a wonderful husband and father. He was a kind, loving and gentle soul who was loved by many people.
Special thanks to Rachel Huff and Danielle Peden who provided daily care for him with love and compassion.Special thanks to his nephew's wife, Shelley Wiseley, who did so many special and thoughtful things for him and Vivian over the years. Thanks to everyone at Frontier Hospice of Lander for the loving care and support at the end of his life.
Howard is survived by his son, Dr. Andrew (Rachel) Huff of Lander, Wyoming; niece Sally (Phil) Elie of Paris, France; nephew Lee (Shelley) Wiseley of Columbus, Georgia; grand nieces and nephews Sam Elie, Ben Elie, Michael Wiseley, Rachel Wiseley and Abigail Wiseley. He is also survived by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren by marriage, all of whom he loved dearly, Danielle Peden, Donald Peden, Dale Peden, Carley Dighton, Gavin Dighton, Brailey Bishop and Reese Peden. He is preceded in death by his wife Vivian, son Lieutenant James Huff, U.S. Navy and sister Dorothy Wiseley.

Funeral arrangements are being made for burial at Arlington Memorial Park in Atlanta, Georgia. There will be a graveside service at a later date.
