Hugh Wellington Jones of Lander, died Tuesday July 6 th , 2010, at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, Wyoming. He was 85.




A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday July 10, 2010 at Hudson's Funeral Home in Lander, Wyoming with military honors.




Hugh Wellington Jones was born November 12, 1924 in Casper, Wyoming the son of Herb and Eleanor Jones. He moved to Lander, Wyoming in 1941 and graduated from the Fremont County Vocational High School in 1942.




He served in the Marines during WWII with the L Company of 23 rd marines, 4 th division. During his duty, Hugh fought on Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima.




After WWII he went to the University of Wyoming to study agriculture. He graduated in 1949. During his summers in college he, a friend and his brother started an outfitting business. He continued his outfitting business for years. In 1948-1958 he was contracted with the U.S. Geological Survey to keep their camps supplied. He continued his outfitting business until 1960.




In 1953 he established his Real Estate business and continued in Real Estate for 56 years. During that time he continued to horse pack into the mountains.




He married Elizabeth Ward in 1957 and raised four children. They later divorced and he continued to raise his children. He started ranching in 1953 and continued ranching till his death. Hugh loved Wyoming and his many friends. He continued friendships with his L Company of the 23 rd Marines, and in 1992 he got together with his companion Virginia Sellin. Virginia's husband, John was his best friend in WWII until John's passing in 1985.




He is survived by his sister Betty Hudson, son Thomas Jones, daughters Nancy (John) Arbenz and Phyllis (Rob) Irwin, Grandchildren Boyd Jones, Trenton Jones, Kaleb Jones and Melody Appleby, Niece and nephew Linda and Zachery Hudson and James Carey all of Lander. His companion's daughters from Omaha Judi Dull, Pattie (Chuck) Watkins and Terry (Mike) Brown. Several grandchildren and great grandchildren from Omaha.




He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Herb and Don Jones, one grandson Robert Appleby and companion Virginia Sellin.
