Harvey Lee Charging passed away on May 20, 2016, on Friday afternoon at Morning Star Care Center in Fort Washakie, Wyoming. A visitation will be held from 5pm-all night on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at Rocky Mountain Hall in Fort Washakie. Funeral Services will be held at 10am on Wednesday, May 25 at Rocky Mountain Hall.
Harvey Lee Charging was born September 30, 1942 to Jennie (Smith) Hunts-Along and Ernest Charging. He was the youngest son born to this union. He also had a sister, Phyllis and she preceded him in death at a young age.He had two brothers, Jerry and Reginald Charging Sr. He was survived by two half-brothers, Russell (Cindy) Hunts-Along of Salt Lake City, Utah and Roger (Betty) Hunts-Along of Rock Point, Arizona. Harvey was an enrolled member of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation and was a fluent speaker of the Hidatsa language. He was a child of the Prairie Chicken and Waster Buster Clan.
In his youth, he was taught to be a Grass Dancer. He was also taught growing up by his step-father John Hunts-Along how to make dance head roaches, which in later life he was well known for his talent for making them. He knew cattle ranching and the cowboy way of life to help his family.
At Mandaree High School he was very athletic; he was also an avid horseback rider.He loved hunting until his health issues prevented him from doing so.
He attended Laney College in Oakland, California and learned a trade, which was to become a commercial baker.While on leave from Oakland, California he was drafted into the U.S. Army; he served a tour of duty from 1965-1968 and he served in different capacities as a result he had significant hearing loss which affected the rest of his life. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1968.
In 1971, he married Patty Prue and in this union they had two daughters of which one daughter survived. Harvey and Patty divorced in 1976.
He worked various jobs and moved his family to Brigham City, Utah. He was employed at Intermountain Inter-Tribal School as a custodian/grounds keeper/maintenance worker until its closure.
Harvey met his current wife Charlene in 1977. They were both employed at Intermountain School. They Married June 13, 1978 in Lander, Wyoming and they were married for 37 years. They had four children, Shelley Charging, Shawna (Rawlin) Friday Sr., Donna of New York City, NY and his only son Jeffery Harvey Earl Charging of Wyoming.
In Wyoming, he was employed at Fort Washakie Elementary School in 1984 and worked there for 15 years as a bus driver/janitor; he was well liked by students and staff alike.He was an avid fan of Wyoming Indian High School Basketball, and Rodeos.
In his leisure time, before and after retiring from work he loved to dance as a Grass Dancer and traditional old style dancing.He was a member of the American Legion- Legion Post 81, Richard Pogue Unit in Fort Washakie, Wyoming. He made many friends from the Pow-Wow circuit. Later in life he could not participate which made him sad.
He came from a large family who still survives him from North Dakota, Fort Berthold Reservation.
Harvey was preceded in death by his father, step-father, mother, paternal and maternal grandparents; his two sisters, two brothers, one nephew and one daughter and Half-sister, Maxine Harrison. We would like to thank Dr. Cardinal, his friend William Calder, and staff of Morning Star Care Center, and the residents he became friends with during his stay at the Manor, and his friends Dea/Kali at CB&T, Christie Connelly at PersonalizedComputers and Bill Durnell, LSP.
