Harold Davis

Harold Davis died Tuesday, June 2, surrounded by family. He was 92 years old.
Per his request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 6, at Hudson's Funeral Home in Lander and interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lander.
Harold Davis was born Sept. 11, 1922, in Pawnee, Okla., the son of Robert Davis Sr. and Katie "Jennie" (Weeks) Davis.
He was a member of the Skidi Band of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma. He grew up with his siblings on the family farm outside of Pawnee, Okla., and he attended grade school and high school in Pawnee where he excelled in sports.
He was a member of the championship basketball team of 1940-1941 which won county, district, regional and state tournaments. His family said he enjoyed dancing at powwows when he was younger, and he was a champion fancy dancer.
In February 1943 he entered the U.S. Marine Corp, and in March 1943 he was assigned to the U.S. Marine Corp Air Division where he specialized in aviation mechanics. He served at Pearl Harbor Ewa Air Base, the Island of Roc Kiwajalien, then to Saipan where he was assigned to a transport squadron. He was sent to Okinawa through Iwo Jima where his squadron flew supplies to the front lines and wounded soldiers to the hospitals. He eventually was sent to Guam and then to San Francisco before discharge.
On June 22, 1943, he married Leona (Chavez) Davis in San Diego, Calif.
He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Air Corp on Dec. 25, 1945. He then moved with his wife and son to Lander.
He worked at the hospital in Fort Washakie, and then started working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs road department as a surveyor technician. He retired from the BIA in 1982.
His family said he celebrated his 50th year in the American Legion in 2006. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Richard Pogue Post 81.
They said he was an avid sport enthusiast. He played independent basketball in Fremont County for several years. He also spent many years bowling in the Lander City Leagues. His family said he loved watching his grandchildren and their friends participate in sports, and he spent a great deal of time doing carpentry, upholstery and yard work. They said he also worked many years helping with the election board for Fremont County. He loved to travel and took many trips to visit his family in Kansas and Oklahoma. They said his greatest joy was spending time with and visiting family and friends.
He is survived by his ex-wife, Leona Davis; daughters Pauline and JoLynn Davis of Lander; grandchildren Emi Gregg, Tracy (Jason) Romberg, Anthony (Colleen) Davis, Robin (Chuck) Olson and Carmen (Andrew) Niemann; great-grandchildren Aaron Gregg, Brandon (Marie) Jones, Brody, Nick, Noah and Rosie Knell, Brittany (Mike) Dailey, Alexa Johnson, Tre, Benjamin, Samuel and Ava Davis, Drew and Jazmyne Reddon, Justin and Dylan Nelson and Samantha and Xavier Olson; great-great-grandchildren Braydon JohnsonBaker, Silas Dailey, Kloie Sanders, Owen Knell, Aubrey Bynon, Hailie and Faith Jones; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; second wife Vera Buckman; son Harold Louis Davis; siblings Robert Davis, Willie Davis, Evelyn Nance, Daisy Ellis, Lucille Long, Florence Anderson, Lena Squirrel and Virginia Adams; granddaughter Crystal Johnson; great-granddaughters Isabel Davis and Andrea` Nelson.
Memorial contributions may be made to Frontier Home Health and Hospice.
