George Alfred Avery

November 14, 1924 — July 23, 2015

Lander area native, George Alfred Avery, died Thursday, July 23, 2015 at Help for Health Hospice Home in Riverton. He was 90 years old. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 1st at 11:00 a.m., at the Museum of the American West in Lander with a meal to follow.

George was born November 14, 1924 at Wind River, Wyoming, the third of four children of Merle and Edna (Shipe) Avery. He was raised on a small ranch near Fort Washakie. His mother died when he was almost four and the children were raised by a single father. He graduated from high school in Lander in 1943 and joined the Army Air Corps, being discharged in 1946. He came home, bought a ranch on North Fork by Lander, married Audrey Lea Betts, on December 24, 1947 and began raising his four children. George and Audrey spent many happy years snowbirding in Arizona and Nevada until her death on February 14, 1989. The next 25 years George spent with Doris Rudd. They enjoyed traveling and spending time with their families.

He is survived by children: Edna (Pat) White of Lander, Ben (Kenna) of Cheyenne, Fonda (Jim) Willcox of Rawlins, and Paul (Debbie) of Riverton. Grandchildren Shane (Wendy) White, Wade (KariLynn) White, Trever (Ronna) White all of Lander, Kerry (Shane) Jinks of Yoder, Joann (Jack) Morey of Clearmont, Julie Avery of Cheyenne, Mark (Martha) of Burns, Shawnna Willcox of Lander. Ken Willcox of North Dakota, Dave (Shawna) Willcox of Aurora, Colorado, Eric (Amy) Willcox of Casper, Nicole (Kent) Parker and Alyssa (Josh) Saltsgaver of Riverton. 22 Great-Grandchildren and 3 Great Great-Grandchildren. Companion Doris Rudd of Lander and her extended family; also nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Audrey, his parents, sister Geraldine Boulette, brothers Don and Charles and one great-grandchild.
