Fred Heryford

Dr. Fred Heryford died on August 18th, 2010, one day prior to his 87 ^th birthday. He died at home surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Midge, He is survived by his brother Dan of Winchester Bay, Oregon, a son, Rick Heryford of Lander, a daughter, Annette Heryford of Lander, a grandson, Levi Heryford of North Bend, Washington, and a granddaughter, Caitlin Heryford of Lander.

Fred Heryford was born August 19 ^th , 1923 to Bessie and Harry Heryford on a ranch outside of Butte Falls, Oregon. He attended a one-room school house with his five brothers and sisters. His first job was as a lookout for the Forest Service near Butte Falls, he then held a number of jobs in logging camps, and worked for awhile in the shipyards of San Francisco as a welder before joining the Navy in September of 1942 where he served as an aviation electronic technician primarily in the Atlantic theatre. After his discharge from the Navy in 1946, he attended college, eventually receiving his Doctorate in Special Education from Greeley, CO in 1961. He met his future wife, Midge at the University of Oregon in Eugene in 1950.

He was the Superintendent of the Wyoming State Training School in Lander from 1961 to 1987, He felt that in 26 years of work at the school he helped to make it a better place for the developmentally disabled, and he was proud of the accomplishments that he and the staff made on behalf of the residents.

After retiring in 1987, he and his wife ran the Village Store Antique Shop until her death in 2004. He enjoyed his family and friends, hunting, camping and building things.

Services are schedule for Monday August 23, 10:30 am at the First Baptist Church, 339 Sweetwater in Lander, snacks will follow.
