Frances Smith Hannum

November 13, 1912 — November 25, 2008

Frances Smith Hannum died Tuesday, November. 25 at Lander Regional Medical Center, where she was being treated for pneumonia.  She was 96 years old.

She was born November. 13, 1912, in Willimantic, CT, the daughter of Frank Morris and Sara Emir (Abernethy) Smith.

After graduation from high school and business college, she worked as a secretary at Connecticut General Life Insurance Co. in Hartford, CT.  In 1940, she resigned to be married to Donald E. Hannum.  They were married November. 2, 1940 in Phoenix, AZ.

The Hannums lived in Los Angeles and Palos Verdes Estates, CA until 1972, when Mr. Hannum retired and they moved to Lander.  Although they had visited Lander and had chosen it for their retirement, they ultimately bought a house sight-unseen on Cedar St., which was their home for 26 years.

The Hannums were always interested in foreign exchange students and hosted a German girl in 1945-46, developing a life-long friendship.  Mrs. Hannum was active as a District Representative of American Field Service for Southern California for many years. After moving to Lander, they continued their interest in the Rotary Club exchange student program, hosting Mats Osterblom, a Swedish boy sponsored by Rotary.  He and his wife and son visited Frances this summer.

Mrs. Hannum was an active member of First United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women.  She served on the Board of Directors of Westward Heights Care Center and was instrumental in the founding of Mountain Vista Retirement Residence, where she was one of its first residents.  She lived there until a year ago, when she moved into Westward Heights.

She was an avid reader and for many years volunteered at the Lander Library, taking books to Westward Heights residents with her friend Ginger Norton.

Mrs. Hannum was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Ruth S. Balch, a neice Sally Hart, and a brother Morris B. Smith.  She is survived by two neices, Beverly (Mrs. William A) Fluty of Wheeling, WV and Ruth S. Brown o f Carlsbad, CA, and several grand-neices and grand-nephews.
