Florence (Pug) Ella Lanouette Jacobs, 82, a long time resident of Lander was taken suddenly and peacefully into the Lord's care in the early morning hours of October 17th. She was born May 8th, 1930, in Pennington County South Dakota, the youngest daughter of Frank and Mable ( Anderson ) Lanouette. She grew up in the Custer and Moon S.D. area and graduated from Custer High School in 1948. As a teenager she lived in the " Look-out Fire Tower at Summit S.D. Her father Frank was employed by the forest service, and the tower watch was one of his many jobs.
Her teen memories were of picking wild strawberries and chasing chickens at the tower. She often told family of the great times she had dancing at the Moon S.D. dancehall. After high school graduation she attended Green Beauty College in Rapid City S.D. After graduation she began her life long career as a hair stylist and beauty shop worker and salon owner. On Easter Sunday April 9th1950, she married Donald Eugene Jacobs in Custer S. D. and started their family.
She spent several years living in the oil field towns of Montana and Wyoming as they traveled for work. She arrived in the Lander area in 1953 and worked the next 45 years as a hair stylist, manager and owner. Irene's Style Salon, the Lovely Lady James & Company, and Headlines are where she made a special difference in people's lives. Later, with her husband Don, they opened Jake's Wild Game Meat Processing on Main Street in Lander, which they ran very successfully for 15 years. "Pug", as she was known by to her friends, was often cutting hair by day and cutting meat by night. She was a successful small business owner, loving mother, grand¬mother, great-grandmother, aunt, and great-aunt.
She was a true blessing to her family which always came first, and loyal to her friends and the Lander Community. She and Don enjoyed 62 years of marriage together, until his death this last February 18th 2012, just 8 months ago. She was the oldest member of the family at this years Lanouette Family reunion and held one of her 3 new great grandson Beckham Jacobs, as the youngest at the family reunion.
She enjoyed the outdoors, cooking, family gatherings and friends. Throughout her life she was a friend to all and always made her home welcome to everyone. Her "Beer Rocks", "Monster Cookies", strawberry-rhubarb pies, angle-food cakes, potato salad, and fried chicken will be missed by everyone. We will all miss her loving smile and down home ways. A special treasure within the last year was the birth of 3 new great-grandsons. She often spoke of how as she looked at them, she saw Don, in their blue eyes and their blond hair. She always said that it was his "wavy blond hair and blue eyes" that attracted her to him over 60 years ago.
She was preceded in death by her husband Donald, parents Frank and Mable Lanouette, whom she provided a home and care for in their latter years, here in Lander.
