Elizabeth Brodie Shirreffs

July 1, 1937 — December 30, 2022

Elizabeth "Betty" Brodie Geddes Shirreffs, 85, passed away on December 30, 2022, in Casper, Wyoming.

Betty was born on July 1, 1937, in Aberdeen, Scotland, to Ernest Geddes and Margaret Cruickshank Geddes. She was born the third of four children.

Betty was working at a small local convenience store in Aberdeen where she was introduced by the owner to William "Bill" Shirreffs (a fellow Aberdonian) in 1959. Bill had immigrated to the States in the mid-1950s but later returned to Aberdeen to find his bride. Betty and Bill dated for a relatively short time before Bill had to return to the States. After Bill arrived back in Wyoming, he asked Betty to join him, and she agreed.  With very limited knowledge of what was in store, she courageously traveled over 5,000 miles all by herself to Riverton, Wyoming. The couple married just 10 days later October 16, 1960, in Lander, Wyoming.

They had three children: Margaret Pugh (Gene), Lander, Wyoming; Bill Shirreffs (Carole), Carlsbad, California; and Jim Shirreffs (Peggy), South Pasadena, California.

They shared a good life raising their children, enjoying their grandchildren, visiting family in Scotland, and traveling to many places throughout the United States and internationally. Bill unfortunately suffered from heart complications and passed away in April 1990 after 28 years of marriage.

Two years later, Betty was introduced to Tom Quillen, a widower (and godsend) with whom she would spend nearly 31 years. They traveled extensively and enjoyed a wonderful life together.

Along with spending time with her family, Betty enjoyed watching mysteries, going for bicycle rides, reading books, and many a good pun.

The family was notified on December 29, 2022, that Betty suffered a heart attack and was sent by life flight to Casper, Wyoming for an emergency heart procedure. The surgery never occurred, as Betty sadly passed away the next morning on December 30, 2022.

Betty is survived by her children; six grandchildren: Riann Ingwerson (Robby) and Dawn Oldman (D. Jay) of Lander, Wyoming; Nicholas, Scott, Katie, and Mandy Shirreffs of California; six great-grandchildren: Ciara Lajeunesse (Layne); Hailey and Derik Ingwerson; D. Jay III, Dayanna, and Delilah Oldman of Lander, Wyoming; and three great-great-grandchildren: Gabriella, Layna and Luna Lajeunesse of Lander, Wyoming; one sister, Margaret Mackie, of St. Louis, Missouri; one sister-in-law, Lynda Shirreffs, of Ohio; and many nieces and nephews residing in the United States and Scotland.

Betty was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband Bill Shirreffs, and two brothers (Tom and Ernie Geddes).
