Elizabeth Lucille McMahon

Elizabeth “Betty” Lucille Frank McMahon, 90, passed away on April 25, 2026 in Layton, Utah. Betty was born on April 8, 1936 in Mitchell, Nebraska and was the eldest of six children. She was raised on a farm in Nebraska before moving to Lander Wyoming, where her family established a cattle ranch. Betty graduated from Fremont County Vocational High School as salutatorian in 1953. She began her first teaching position at the age of 18 on the Wind River Reservation in Crowheart Wyoming. She attended Western Montana College, where she was active in Chorus, Women’s Athletic Association, and Kappa Phi Honor Society, and served as president of the Art Club and Art Editor for the college yearbook. She graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts in Art.

Betty met her beloved husband, Michael Geary McMahon (Mike) while attending summer school at Western. They were married in Dillon, Montana on May 30, 1958.

She and Mike made their home in Anaconda, Montana, where they raised three children. Kind and patient, Betty was a born teacher. She operated a private kindergarten when her children were young and returned to full-time teaching in 1970. She taught second grade at W.K. Dwyer School until her retirement in 1996. Betty and Mike returned to Lander, Wyoming in 1997, and lived there for 24 years before moving to Utah in 2021. In retirement, Betty became an avid quilter who created many beautiful quilts and wall hangings.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, William and Pauline Korell Frank; and three brothers, William, Gary, and Ronald Frank.

She is survived by a son, John McMahon of South Ogden, UT; daughters, Laurie Clark of Layton, UT, and Mary Ellen McMahon of Portland, OR; grandchildren, Holly (Peter) Jensen of Midvale, UT, Erin (Jordan) Fowles of Layton, UT, and Brian Clark of Layton, UT, five great-grandsons, Max and Clark Fowles, and Nathan, Elias, and Caleb Jensen; two sisters, Karen (Lee) Wilkes of Pavillion, WY and Gail O’Neal of Marriott-Slaterville, UT, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Betty was a member of the Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Lander, Wyoming at 10:00 on May 1, 2026. Services will be followed by interment at Mount Hope Cemetery.

A viewing will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at Hudson’s Funeral Home, 680 Mount Hope Dr., Lander, WY 82520.
