Funeral services for Donald James "Donnie" Chavez will be at 10am on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at Wyoming Indian High School.Interment will follow at St. Michael's Mission Cemetery at Ethete.An evening service begins at 7pm, Friday, October 9, 2015 also at Wyoming Indian High School with a wake to follow at #8 Farm Station Road, Ethete.
Donald James "Donnie" Chavez was born January 6, 1952 and passed away surrounded by his loved ones on Sunday, October 4, 2015.He is the son of Joseph Chavez, Jr. and Lillian Oldman Chavez.
Donnie worked as a teacher's assistant and bus driver for Wyoming Indian High School from 1974 to 1988.Donnie returned to school at Central Wyoming College and University of Wyoming.He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education in 1990.He taught social studies at Wyoming Indian High School since 1991.
Donnie was a dedicated teacher who devoted his life to providing an education for the young people of Wyoming Indian Schools.He was a tireless advocate in meeting the needs of all students regardless of their grade and age.He believed in each of them, never giving up, and always offering encouragement.He was a respected grandfather among the Northern Arapaho people, active in the ceremonies and community.He was a humble Northern Arapaho man who believed in the goodness of others and life.Donnie was a role model not only for the students but for all the young people he taught throughout his many years of teaching.He incorporated traditional beliefs in teaching invaluable lessons about life along with teaching history and government.He was a true teacher, a true friend, a respected grandfather and a humble and proud Arapaho man.
Donnie is survived by his parents; sisters Arline Trosper, Myra Watt, Iris Oldman, Alvena Oldman, Georgia Gneiting, Juanita Stamp, Donna Hiwalker, Debbie Vega, Rosella Morin, Gloria Goggles; brothers Martin, Keith, Clarence and Isaac Chavez, Vernon, Alden and Pat Harris and numerous nephews, nieces, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sisters Kathryn Chavez, Vera Trosper, and Polly Kniffin; brothers James and Duane Oldman, Michael Hatt, Bruce Chavez; nieces and nephews.
