Dr. Charles F. McMahon age 83 passed away at his home in Lander on Friday, July 24, 2020.
Dr. Charles Francis McMahon was born on April 17, 1937 to Leo and Hazel McMahon in Hamilton, Montana. He grew up traveling with his mother and brother Leo Joseph "Pat"
as she took various teaching positions around the state. He spent long periods with his beloved grandmother Mary Belle Waddell in Hamilton when he would spend time up Blodgett Canyon enjoying the wilderness. As a teenager he spent summers working as a packer for the Forest Service, taking supplies to trail and fire crews. After graduating from Hamilton High School in 1955, he joined his brother Pat in Eugene at the University of Oregon, where he received his BS in 1960. Following his undergrad he remained at the University of Oregon, where he completed his Master of Science and Medical Doctor degrees in 1963.
Chuck met and married Mary Ann Clausen in 1961 and moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where he completed his internship in 1964 after which he served the Navy as Chief Medical Officer of the 8 th Marine Regiment, 2 nd Marine Division, FMF. Upon completion of his tour, he was lured to Lander by his brother who was serving as the doctor in Ft. Washakie. He served as the first Medical Director of the Wyoming State Training School until 1972 and moved to California where he did a residency in neurology at UC Davis. Returning to Lander was the desire of the whole family, so in 1975 they returned.
Dr. McMahon is survived by his children, Tom McMahon, wife Barbara and children Anne (husband Ben) Singleton, Joseph McMahon, Daniel McMahon, Ens. Nathan (wife Audrey) McMahon, Rosemarie McMahon and Sharon McMahon, Kathy (husband Leland) Stocker and children Ruth (husband Jay) Hardesty, Martha (husband Shawn) Tarver, Josiah Stocker, Esther Stocker and James Stocker, Lori Fulton and children Shannon (husband Brendon) Jones and children Addie and Kellan, and Alex (husband Cristian) Ochoa; sister-in-law Janet McMahon, nephews Scott McMahon and Tim McMahon and niece Shelly McMahon.
Dr. McMahon spent his life serving others, always preferring others to himself. He enjoyed time working on his small ranch in the Red Canyon, camping and fishing with his family, as well as following his children around the state as they swam.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, July 29 th , 2020 at 2:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church, 339 Sweetwater St., Lander, Wyoming.
Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery with military honors.
