Bill Hallam died at his home in Lander on Monday, March 21, 2011, at the age of 82.
Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
Blair Stone "Bill" Hallam was born at his mother's family home in Salem, Utah, on Feb. 24, 1929, to Cora V. (Stone) Hallam and Melvin T. "Mel" Hallam, while the family was living in Elko, Nev. Shortly after his birth, they moved to Lander.
After graduating from Fremont County Vocational High School in Lander in 1946, Mr. Hallam went to the University of Wyoming, where he played football and played trombone in the band. He met Patricia "Pat" Caldwell of Riverton during Christmas break in 1948, and they were married on March 19, 1950, in Riverton.
Mr. Hallam worked at the family business, Hallam Incorporated, from 1950 until 1963, when he purchased the business from his father and brother. During that time, four children were born to the couple, all in Lander. Mr. Hallam sold the business and retired in 2003.
His family said that from hunting and camping to dirt bikes, road bikes and snowmobiles, Mr. Hallam found enjoyment being outdoors with his family.
He was one of the first individuals to ride a snowmobile into Yellowstone National Park, venturing out with extra gas and tents in 1967, and made, at the very least, one trek annually for the next 37 years, finally calling it quits only when the NPS required a guide with every group.
The family said Mr. Hallam loved airplanes and flying. As a young boy he rode his bicycle to the airport in hopes of seeing an airplane or talking to a pilot. He earned his pilot's license in 1956, and went on to obtain many additional ratings, including instrument, multi-engine and commercial. He continued flying through 2010.
The family said that boating on Yellowstone Lake was also a high spot in Mr. Hallam's life. He first started putting a boat on Yellowstone Lake in 1958 first at Grant Village, then West Thumb, then finally at Bridge Bay. He continued the tradition through the summer of 2009.
Mr. Hallam was active in the Wyoming Auto Dealers Association, holding all offices including the presidency; served on the Wyoming Aeronautics Commission from 1984 to 2001, and was very involved in the UW Cowboy Joe Club for a large portion of his life.
Mr. Hallam is survived by daughters, Linda HallamSutto and husband Ken of Lacey, Wash., Connie Hopper and husband Buck of Erie, Colo., and Susan Masson and husband Bill of Lander; son, Bob Hallam and his wife Darlene of Pinedale, and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
