Betty Tunnell

Long time Lander resident, Betty Tunnell died on February 7, 2016.Born Elizabeth Jean Sager in Clyde, Kansas, on September 29, 1918 to James B. and Harriet Tolin Sager, Betty was the fourth daughter.She graduated from Clyde High School in 1936 and graduated from Bethany College, in Lindsborg, Kansas, in 1940 with a Bachelor of Music Education degree.At her first teaching job in Courtland, she became the first female band director in Kansas. Betty married Dr. Henry L. Tunnell in September, 1941; and the couple moved to Lander, Wyoming in July, 1942 where her husband practiced osteopathic medicine.

Betty was active in many Lander activities.She gave piano lessons for many years before teaching at Northside Elementary School for 15 years.She was also a charter member of the Lander Community Concert Board of Directors and the organist/pianist for the Lander First United Methodist Church.Additionally she was involved in the Lander Shrine, Daughters of the Nile, Eastern Star, and the One Shot Antelope Hunt.Betty enjoyed traveling with family and friends, dining out, and reading.

Mrs. Tunnell is survived by four daughters and three sons – in- law: Sydney and Phil Fuentes, Susan and Dan Homec,Kristin Reuter, and Janis and Miles Seid;eight grandchildren: Erik Fuentes, Shaana Fuentes Baise, Jonathan Reuter, Jason Reuter, Jason Homec, Justin Homec, Sabrina Seid Svoboda, and Branden Seid; and ten great-grandchildren: Jordon Fuentes, Alexis Baise, Abigail Reuter, Hilary Reuter, Ava Homec, Reagan Homec, Olivia Seid, Aubrey Seid, Sophie Svoboda, and Skylar Svoboda.She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters (Helen, Sydney, and Ruth) and her husband Henry Louis Tunnell.

A memorial service will be held in the spring.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lander Community Food Bank or the Meals on Wheels program; or the Lander Valley High School music program.
