ALONZO MOSS, SR.
Alonzo Moss, Sr. "Wox Tebe'eihoo'" was born June 30, 1938 in Fort Washakie, Wyoming to Moses Paul Moss and Wyoma Bitner Moss.He passed away on June 2, 2015 at his family home in Ethete, Wyoming.Alonzo married Gladys Caroline Goggles-Moss on February 8, 1958 in Lander, Wyoming. The wake services will be held at Blue Sky Hall in Ethete on Friday, June 5 with Funeral services on Saturday, June 6, 2015.Burial will be at St. Michaels Mission in Ethete.
Alonzo's passion in life was teaching and restoring the Arapaho Language.More than half his lifetime, he taught the language to anyone that was willing to learn.Since 1995, he began working with Dr. Andrew Cowell, linguist from the University of Colorado in Boulder.He and Mr. Cowell have published several books, and other teaching tools to restore and revitalize the Arapaho Language.In 2010, Alonzo received an award as "Indian of the Year" from the American Indian Exposition in Anadarko, Oklahoma for his great contributions to the retention of native languages.Alonzo was currently employed with the Arapaho Tribe as a Language and Culture Commissioner.
Throughout his life, Alonzo worked as a tree faller for various logging companies.He also worked on various labor jobs.In 1970, he obtained his G.E.D., and began taking college classes at Central Wyoming College in Riverton, WY.A few years later, he was hired through Wyoming Indian Schools as a teacher's assistant.A year after that, he was hired to teach the Arapaho Language at Wyoming Indian High School where he taught for 20 years.He retired and then began teaching college courses in Arapaho Language for Central Wyoming College, Wind River Tribal College, University of Colorado in Boulder and the University of Wyoming.
He not only enjoyed teaching the Arapaho Language but also teaching music.He loved singing both gospel and Arapaho songs.He was baptized Catholic but spent a lot of time with the St. Michael's Episcopal Church. With the St. Michael'sMission, he was able to travel the country and share his love of music.He also chronicled Arapaho music with Dr. Ron Lah from Albuquerque, NM.Heunderstood the importance of retaining not only the language but ceremonial songs of the Arapaho people.He worked with Dr. Lah 48 years ago recording tribal singers.
Since he was very young, he enjoyed many sports and shared his many stories of playing basketball.He was also an avid Wyoming Cowboys, Denver Broncos, and Chiefs and Lady Chiefs Basketball fan.
One of his many hobbies also included gambling.He was a regular at the Little Wind Casino but enjoyed all the local casinos.
His family and friends will miss his determination and passion for living the Arapaho way of life, his strong will, and his sense of humor.He had a strong belief in protecting our Arapaho way of life and was a ceremonial grandfather.
Alonzo is survived by his daughters; Rickina and Bill Armour, Aleta Moss, Marva Moss, Debbie Antelope, Sandra and Pat IronCloud, Aldene and Martin Underwood, Jr., Avalene and Mylan Glenmore, Sr., Alyssa Martinez, and Donna Trosper.Sons; Alonzo Moss, Jr. and Jimmy Locust.Brothers; Nelson Moss, Leonard and Alice Moss, Donald Moss and Will Peters.Sisters; Anita Carrier Moss, Susanna Oldman, Rosella Moss, Ursula Aragon, Maxine Moss, Frances Merle Haas, Frances Ann Heidenberger, Sara Wiles, Shirley Enos, and Sylvia Moss. He helped raise his grandchildren and great-grandchildren:Lorena Moss, Latoyia Moss, Claude Moss, Jr., Tiara and Kenny Crawford III, Steve Sun Rhodes, Jr., Mylan Glenmore, Jr., Raphael Glenmore, Jola WallowingBull, Nolita WallowingBull, Alvonia McElroy and Jolynn Wallowing Bull-FightingBear.He had 41 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson, Cordell Spoonhunter and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 51 years Gladys Moss, his children; Darla Jean Moss and Claude Moss, Sr.His parents, Paul and Wyoma Moss, His brothers; Harold Moss, Richard Moss, Norman Moss, Charles
